Diaper Bouquet

Come check out my new blog at BeingGenevieve.com

So I was looking on Pinterest for a gift idea for my little sister's baby shower.
I stumbled across this picture and was thrilled! My little sister is expecting a girl and naming her Rose.
What could be more perfect than a diaper bouquet of "roses" for a little baby named Rose?!?

The only problem was that there wasn't a tutorial on how to put it together.

Here is what I did to re-create the diaper bouquet . . .

What you will need:
-About 75 newborn diapers (or any size, but you will need a bigger vase to make it look proportional)
-About 38 wood dowels
-About 75 little clear elastics
-About 16-1/2 yards of Ribbon (I only used 10 yards and just put it on some of the diapers)
-Foam Ball (mine was 6", but it all depends on what size will fit on top of the vase without falling in the vase)
-Vase
-Vase Stuffers (I used baby lotion, baby wash, baby powder, butt paste)
-Decorative Ribbon
What to do:
Cut all the dowels in half.

Grab 1 diaper, dowel, and elastic for each rose.

Open the diaper and place dowel as I have in the picture below.

Close the diaper and begin rolling the diaper around the dowel.

Hold the diaper with one hand as you open the elastic.

Place elastic around the diaper about 2/3 the way down.

This is the top view of the rolled diaper.

Cut a piece of ribbon and tie around where the elastic is.
I think I cut my ribbon 8"
As mentioned above, I only tied ribbon around about 1/2 of the diapers because I didn't buy enough ribbon at the time. So if you are short ribbon don't worry it will look great and no one will notice!

After all the diapers are rolled you can begin sticking them in the foam ball.
Place the foam ball on the top of the vase.
Stick in 4 roses so that the foam ball won't move around while on the vase.

Now begin filling in, as I have done, around the top of the vase.

After the top of the vase is filled in, to secure the foam ball from moving, stick a rose in the top of the foam ball. Begin filling in around it and work down the foam ball.
(Try to only stick the rose in when you are sure on the location or else your foam ball will end up with too many holes and the roses won't stay in the foam very well.)

Once you have filled all empty spaces it will look like this.
Lift up the foam ball carefully and place in the vase stuffers. Place foam ball back on the vase.

Tie a decorative ribbon around the vase.

Now you are ready to wow everyone at the baby shower with your diaper bouquet!

  1. How long are the dowels once they are cut in half? 6 inches, 8 inches or what? Love this idea of roses.
    Thanks

    1. I'm so sorry I can't remember how long the dowels were cut in half. They might have been about 6".

    2. I am going to try this and use wooden skewers. I think they'd work fine. What do you think Genevieve?

    3. I think they would work just fine. I would personally stick the pokey end of the skewer into the foam ball, instead of into the diaper.

  3. I'm a little confused as to why this calls for 75 diapers but only 38 dowels.

    1. Diane,
You will actually cut the dowels in half right at the beginning. This will give you 76 dowels to go with the 75 diapers. You will have an extra half-dowel that can be thrown away or kept for a future project.

    1. Mysteryartist,
Thank you so much! :) The clear elastics can be found in the hair department of Wal-mart or Target. They are actually little girl hair elastics. Good luck and thank you for the question!

    2. Hello Miss. Genevieve. I love the way this adorable bouquet looks I'll want to try for the next time that there is a baby shower announcement! Also wanted to share what I usually do when not able to find the clear elastics. What I do is I buy the multicolored ones and separate them from the red, pink & purple for girls, & the rest for boys or a mix and it also works wonderfully. I hope this helps and have a blessed day

  6. Genevieve,
I have another question! How do you accent it with the tulle? I decided I want to make 6 diaper Bouquets... and use them for table centerpieces. I want to make sure from the beginning so that I don't have to go back and redo them. Wish me well! Lol :)

    1. As you can tell from my picture, I decided not to do the tulle accent. BUT if I were to do them I would add the tulle at the very end. Here is what I would do.

Wrap a wood dowel with some tulle, making the tulle come above the end of the wood dowel by about 3-6 inches. Tie, very tightly, the tulle onto the dowel with some ribbon.

Then clip the last 2-4 inches of the tulle (that is poking above the end of the dowel) with scissors to help it fan out. Just like is done here with dough, but imagine it done with tulle (http://www.fivelittlechefs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/cuttingrolls.jpg -AND- http://www.fivelittlechefs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/cutrolls.jpg)

Now take the dowels that have tulle on them and stick them in between the diapers in random places. This will help fill in any gaps you might have. Does this make sense???

    1. Marcie,
I did buy all of my supplies at Walmart, but that was 2-3 years ago. I've noticed that Walmart doesn't seem to carry items consistently. Good luck and thank you for the question! :)

  12. So you didn't secure the foam ball to the vase? Will it fall off the vase? This could be my next project for a baby shower.

    1. To secure the ball onto the top of the vase, I would trim a tall foam block into a circular pillar. Put glue dots onto one end, center it into the middle of the vase and affix it to the bottom of the vase. Then, mask the foam pillar by surrounding it with the baby items around the pillar to make it appear as only baby items inside. Then, push a 1/2 skewer through the bottom of the foam ball and the other 1/2 into the foam pillar. Then, put your diaper Rose's in.

  13. Hi Ms. Genevieve! Great tutorial! Your bouquet is gorgeous. I'd like to add a couple of comments if I may. I made one yesterday. I was carrying it in to show my husband and the ball fell off because it was so top heavy. I had sticks and diapers EVERYWHERE! LOL. So I made a few adjustments. I weighted the container down with clear glass gems. I used a square piece of styrofoam and trimmed the corners to fit tightly in my container. The styrofoam was about one and a half inches above the lip of my container. This worked nicely and is extremely stable now. I cut some 6"x6"squares of tissue paper (blue for boy) and poked them in between my "roses" for color and filler. It came out super cute. Thank you for your time and effort to share this tutorial with us!
